Some lucky Sea Cadets from TS Achilles and TS Bellona went on a day sailing voyage on an NZ Navy Chico Sailing Yacht. It was a fantastic day and Cadets even got the opportunity to take the helm!
At TS Achilles, sometimes at the end of term we like to get out of the sailing boats and do an activity that is a little different from what we do during the term. To mark the end of Term 3, Cadets went tenpin bowling together and had lots of fun and laughs together.
Training Ship Achilles first opened it's doors at it's current location at 19 Tamaki Drive, Okahu Bay in 1964.
Now we have been training Sea Cadets and future leaders for 50 years! Where did the time go? We have recently held a Reunion for people who have been involved with Training Ship Achilles during it's rich 50 year history. A Remembrance Service and Open Day was held at the TS Achilles Unit in Okahu Bay. Mr Frank Sanft, the first Unit Commander of TS Achilles gave a great speech about the Unit's history. CDRE John Campbell and CDR Glen Stokes also presented LT Bob Jamieson, our current Unit Commander, with his second Cadet Forces Bar award, which represents his 28 years of service to Sea Cadets. A Formal Reunion Dinner was held for previous and current members of TS Achilles. This event was attended by special guests CDRE John Campbell MNZM, RNZN, and his wife Ellie, along with CDR Glen Stokes, who is the Commandant of NZ Cadet Forces. Sea Cadets from TS Achilles participated in the NZ Navy Damage Control School Exercise. This is the same program that Navy recruits do during their training. The Cadets really enjoyed the challenge.
Sea Cadets from TS Achilles were given the opportunity to visit the Dry Dock at the Devonport Navy Base. It was amazing to see these big Ships up close!
Training Ship Achilles competed at the Northern Area Sea Cadet Regatta at Whangaparaoa alongside other Sea Cadet Units from around the upper North Island.
